Smart Core Trainer

Smart Core Trainer Prototype

The stability-based core trainer is a balance board with 30 degrees of tilt in all directions, as well as rotation and roll. In terms of fitness devices specifically targeting mobility, joints, and core strength, this is one of a kind. How can an already functional piece of equipment be made even better? By adding Bluetooth! What’s so great about this product is that by adding a communication link with the balance board, a smartphone can collect the user’s performance data (tilt angle, rotation, etc). This data can then be used by building mathematical models to assess performance, identify areas of weakness, and provide feedback to the user. In addition to the tilt data, the balance board includes a ring of LEDs which gives the user real-time tilt feedback directly on the board so that they can make corrections during a workout.

Q Harmonics was invited to contribute during the prototyping phase of this project as the first electronic features were being rolled out. One of our collaborators was the original architect of the electronics and we were tasked with iterating the design to make it scalable for manufacturing, as well as improving the user experience by adding some additional features. The design was updated to a ring-PCB configuration with several new features added. The firmware was also updated to include new configuration options for the balance LEDs.
